Re: Mast-side winches for main halyard? or what?
When I raise the main, either the reefing lines get caught on something and I have to go up to free them, or the battens get stuck in the lazy jacks, and I have to go up and pull the main down to free those.
Stow the lazy jacks at the mast. Pull mine forward and hook them under their cleat on the mast. Deploy them when dropping the sail. No problems with them hanging up when stowed forward and they aren't flopping up against the sail when sailing.
Reefing is way easier from the cockpit than hanging on for dear life with a bucking and banging boom. Only thing to be cognizant of is they hang down till the sail is hoisted far enough to take up the slack. Reef sequently so no problems with slack lines as the wind pipes up.
Sometimes it's easier to be able to control the halyard at the mast when working on the sail controls or the mast. A Clutch or cleat for the halyard suffices for that. Mast winch could come in handy for hoisting up a bosun's chair so not useless
