My approach is to use a relatively inexpensive paint, not multiple coats and have a diver "service" the bottom regularly... usually at 4-6 week intervals. I get the advantage of getting the bottom surveyed every service and the zinc could be changed if need be.

One coat application of not spendy paint saves money which can be paid to the diver.

Further loading the bottom up with paint adds considerable weight to your boat over time. A gallon of bottom paint is perhaps (guess) 40#... and a 2 coat application would be 100# per year. When I decided to soda blast all the bottom paint off the boat and do a barrier coat... almost 1,000 pounds of old paint came off the boat! This was 25 years of bottom paint.

I have lowered my expectations for anti fouling paint... and am never dissatisfied with the diver.

You forgot to add the haul out and storage to your cheap paint. I don’t have that expense, except every 4th year. Ablative paints wear off so when it comes time to actually paint I usually am down to the barrier coat so no scrapping necessary.

We do use a diver in years 2 and 3 every couple of months.
