Question Is this a healthy Catalina 22 hull/keel?

Hi guys, new member here. I'm thinking about buying a Catalina 22, and this photo is from the underside of the boat. The keel looks a bit funky, but I know these swing keels were iron, and maybe that's why? Either that or maybe it's just peeling paint.

Also, the bottom paint that the owner had paid someone to apply wipes off with the stroke of your hand. (and the very bottom looks like it's lost all the paint in this photo). Is this normal?

Thanks for any advice. The rest of the boat looks anywhere from great to acceptable depending on where you look.

It's hard to assess a hull and keel from photos. You don't say what year it is. It could be 30, 40, or 50 years old. Layers of old paint will look rough.

There is a lot that can go on under the surface. It takes a professional surveyor to fully assess it. Some people will tap all over the hull and keel to listen for places that sound drastically different, suggesting blisters in the fiberglass, or water intrusion. A tap test can reveal some things that will help you decide whether or not it's worth moving to the next step and getting a professional surveyor to assess it. I've heard people on here say that some surveyors, particularly if they don't have to travel far, will give you a pre-survey quick assessment for a fee, and will offer you advice on whether or not you should proceed to purchase a complete survey from them.

There is a very good post on here detailing how to do your own DIY pre-survey survey.

Old bottom paint will chalk some color off on your hand when rubbbed.

Sorry about that. It's an '84. I don't know if a paid survey is on the cards since it's only a $4k-5k boat. I don't have the cash in my budget for that. I've gone over the boat pretty thoroughly and this is my only concern at this point.

I tell you what - that keel is a lot nicer than mine, and mine sails just fine.

Thanks guys. I think I won't worry about it. It needs a new coat of bottom paint, but I can do that.

Success will be in the prep.
Go overboard on prepping for the paint.
Youll tell yourself later how smart you were

If you don't get a professional survey done on the boat, and you don't know enough to do it yourself, then your budget obviously can take a $4k-5k hit without any problems! A survey can save you your investment AND the cost of disposing of a worthless boat!
As for all that old bottom paint, why not spend the few hundred now to have it removed and start anew? It will cost you lots more in the long run if you don't.

Not disagreeing with you Capta, but where do you have bottom paint stripped for a few hundred?
