Crack repair on varnished cockpit table

I am a hands-on guy when it comes to mechanical stuff, but I dont have a lot of experience with woodwork, particularly where aesthetics are important.

Our boat has a beautiful varnished wood cockpit table that has a small crack in it. I want to repair the crack and refinish it so that water does not get into the wood and cause more damage. I am not sure what the best approach would be. Does the crack need to be opened up and then filled? Or is it small enough that simply varnishing over it will fill the crack? What products and procedures are best for such a repair?

Re: Crack repair on varnished cockpit table

I'd wick thin (versus medium or thick) CA glue into the cracks top and bottom then quickly clamp. Think CA glue is intended to wick into thin cracks like that. It's incredibly strong although doesn't flex like white glue or epoxy but for that thin crack it's what I'd use to stabilize. You might have to go to woodcrafters for the thin stuff but maybe HD or Ace. then sand and re-varnish.

Just be quick as it sets really fast...like 10 seconds or so.
