Reinstalling stanchions on teak cap rail

I need to replace 3 stanchions that sit on teak cap rail. The bases have 4 bolts and a backing plate below. Boat is Island Packet 35. Old stanchions had some rubber like sealant under them. I’m going with same bases so there will be no need for new holes. What do you suggest for bedding them? Thank you in advance.

Re: Reinstalling stanchions on teak cap rail

Would you just do the bolts, or entire base?

Re: Reinstalling stanchions on teak cap rail

I would probably just do the bolts as the butyl will squeeze out from under the base?

That is what I was thinking as well. Just doing the bolts.

Chamfering the bolt holes is a choice

Corrected.

Also, I prefer to not have sealant under the outboard edge of the base so any water that gets under it (and it will) has a path to escape.

I seal the countersunk boltholes and lay a bead around the other three sides of the base. I've never had a leak after doing it that way.

Kriss,

You could refer to Maine Sail's write-up, and use his Butyl if the write-up helped you. https://marinehowto.com/bed-it-tape/

Re: Reinstalling stanchions on teak cap rail

I have the butyl tape, but I was not sure if installing hardware on teak would be any different. The factory used something like liquid rubber on the entire length of the bolts. They are now a real b..tch to pull out. I got blisters on my blisters from trying to pull them out.
