Henderson MKIII replacement

My ancient Henderson mkIII through bulkhead mounted manual bilge pump stopped working over last summer and from research it seems the mkV diaphragm will replace the one in the mkiii however the valves are long out of production

A thread on a contessa website suggests that the mkV pump is a direct replacement as far as bolt up pattern and bulkhead rubber fitting however Iím unsure. I was wondering if anyone had done this replacement

I can always order from west marine and return if it doesnít fit but wanted to see before I put in the trouble.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

Same footprint seems to be important.
Learn if there are new pumps with same.
Prob easiest longterm fix

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

Yes what Iím wondering is if the mkV available New has the same bolt pattern as the original mkiii, I canít find a mounting diagram online to match up with my measurements from the boat.

Also if the mkV rubber bulkhead is the same as the mkiii

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

For anyone wondering, the whale/simms engineering mark v is a direct replacement for the old mkiii. Same bolt holes, size etc.

The base of the pump is exactly the same as well as the diaphragm and pumping mechanism however the cover is different to accommodate the joker style valve they use in all of their other pumps.

The new mark v even still says Henderson on it instead of whale!

I know there are plenty of these left in boats so I hope it helps anyone looking around on the internet for a solution.

These pumps are different from whales numerical pumps in that the v and iii are different from the 5 and 3, I donít have either of these so I canít speak to their bolt alignment or sizes

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

I hope you don't mind if I join in. I have a similar problem with 3 old Henderson pumps. One is leaking and I need to get it out and rebuild it. One has a hole in the front plate which is just a dust cover.

My boat is 40 years old and I am assuming the pumps to be original fitment.

Can anyone confirm the model from the pics.

Dependent on the model I guess but what about rebuild kits. My current understanding is the Mk 5 diapragm will fit but not the valves. The front plate rubber is also available.

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

It looks to me like you have a mark 5 style pump and rebuild kits are available anywhere.

All the kit is is a diaphragm, auction and discharge valve.

Is yours a joker style discharge valve?

This is a great coincidence. Was just about to start rebuilding mine & trying to figure out what the hell mine was. Looks just like TQA's.

Re: Henderson MKIII replacement

Interesting, we have a double acting Mark V bilge pump. Essentially two pumps on one actuating shaft, back to back. I try it once in a while. Until 2 days ago it worked fine, now seems to be operating inefficiently.

We also have 2 Lavac toilets that use the same pump making 4 pumps in total on this boat.

I think I have 2 rebuild kits aboard, and a spare pump.
