Solar vent location?

I want to install a solar fan/vent in my seaward 23. What's the best location? Cabin is small so airflow considerations shouldn't matter all that much. Forward hatch is an option, but (a) hatch is small so don't want to take it up with a big fan, and (b) i've seen some mentions that these fans aren't totally water-tight so further aft is better.

Is placing it on the the main hatch a bad idea (assuming there is room under when slid forward)? Other option is port side cabin top, same location the winch is on starboard side, but might be a trip hazard.

I think that someday you will be sorry for mutilating any hatch.

Fair point. But cutting a (fairly large) hole in my very limited deck space is not much more appealing.. I supposed if I stick it in the forward hatch I can just install a new one if I don't like it. Much easier then epoxying a hole.

I agree, cutting a hole in the deck would be worse.

Have three in my 32 footer, one in the forward hatch (plexiglass) and one each side amidships (fiberglass deck). Forward one expels air and the other two introduce air. Works well, no smells.

Sounds like a good setup. Now I'm thinking I go with one in the plexiglass hatch too, just easier. Obviously I don't have quite the deck space you do so that's harder Maybe one of these, once I find somewhere on deck is most out of the way. For example the "winch location" on the port side, where I don't have one, shouldn't see much traffic I think.

My boat also came with the zarcor doors with plexiglass, so some sort of louvered vent there might be an option. Either in the plexi, or below through the starboard. (anything not involving permanent holes in the boat itself )
