Bottom Paint COLOR!

So just curious I have seen lots of colors on sailboat bottoms, black, green, red, blue etc. Just wondering is it all about personal preference or does one color hold a particular advantage over the other. Maybe easier to see growth when cleaning or easier to see if capsized, more copper oxide etc?

Re: Bottom Paint COLOR!

I don't know about right now , the last time I bought Pettit Trinidad SR the red had the highest amount of copper . I have since switched over to Z Spar B 90 red , I think it has about the same amount of copper . I was told by my favorite yard manager , Lupe , that the Z Spar was harder and would last a little longer and I think it does . The first time we did bottom paint on lil'ol' Patricia A I chose black , never liked it because there was no contrast with the boot stripe . I like red because of the contrast .

Re: Bottom Paint COLOR!

I chose red *because* it matches my boot stripe!

At one point I was considering painting bottom paint over the boot stripe and just not having a boot stripe and then I woke up . Hehe .

Re: Bottom Paint COLOR!

I don't think it matters. It's just aesthetics.

Although, it's probably harder to tell a heeled over bottom is slimed, if it's a very dark color, such as black.

Re: Bottom Paint COLOR!

You just want to have two contrasting colors if you are doing two coats. That way you can see easily how your top coat is wearing

Re: Bottom Paint COLOR!

we have a nice barnacle scratch on our hull from a hump back breaching straight up on us. Off the Washington coast a couple years ago. Scared the S#&* out of us. Fortunately it went straight back down.

More than once I've been told they do that more to dark hulls than light. ours is black.

Have not changed colors but am fairly leery of whales now.

Thats all well and good but you are normally buying those colors in 1 or 5 gal buckets.

A guess....
His boat will take 3 to 3.5 gal for 2 coats and 3rd coat at waterline the leading edges and rudder.

How would you break that down by bucket of color?...

Just use a color that contrasts with current color
