Re: Stuffing box problems

I was fortunate to come of age in Victoria B.C. Several compatriots were Scottish so the terms spanner/wrench Stiltson/pipe, monkey jaws/ visegrip were just interchangeable. ,As for the difference between a 6 point and a 12 point box wrench, cutting a gap in a 12 point box would be preferable considering the limited swing room. Care should be taken so not to stuff up the job>

Kriss,Just re read the 1st post . Since you've been tightening the stuff to no avail and now can't budge it???? is it remotely possible that you are suffering a brain fart and the cure is 'lefty loosey, righty tighty. ??? Strange things happen but you should be KO now.

Re: Stuffing box problems

Good point, Len. But I think I have just tightened it really snug and it is stuck now. Fortunately the drip rate went down quite a bit and I decided to leave well enough alone and keep an eye on it as I motor north. If it stays like that, I will repack it when I pull the boat out later this year.

Probably the best option at the moment, but if you find yourself embracing the cut the ring option at a later date may I suggest that you buy the very best quality spanner that you can find, don't embrace the "I'll only use it once so the cheaper is best philosophy", cutting a section out of the ring weakens the spanner substantially, don't ask me how I know.
