News stuffing box keeps stopping drips?

Replaced my stuffing box over winter. Looked all good to me anyways. Adjusted it hand tight to stop leakingand went for a sail. I checked the drip rate while motoring out of the bay. 1 drop per 10sec approx. Ok.

End up motoring a bit later that day and notice the pan under my engine where the stuffing leaks to is dry. I check it and no drips. I loosen it off to about 1 drip every 2sec or so for fear of burning my prop shaft. Make it to the Anchorage. Set up for the night and head off this morning. No wind. Engine on and motored 30mins and notice no water again. Stuffing box has stopped again.

Loosen it to 2 drips per second now. Keep on trucking. Checked it now (I'm currently IN the Lazarette) and yep it stopped again. Loosened and watching it now. 2 or 3 drips per sec in gear and getting back to my slip.

Ideas??

Re: News stuffing box keeps stopping drips?

The stuffing may be expanding as it is now exposed to heat and water. It should be dripping at about 1 drop every 10 sec while in gear - but you already know this.

Thanks everyone. I figured it's better than it leaking like a sieve because that would mean i did it wrong. I'll keep an eye.
