BW6 gearbox, Bukh DV20, stuck in fwd

Hi, my gearbox is stuck in fwd. I know it’s not the cable, the selector at the gearbox is definitely stuck. Discovered next to no gearboxoil, put in new oil - 0.4 litres as per manual, but not even showing up on dipstick, so about to add more till it shows up/come out overflow - whichever comes first! From some forum surfing I suspect the The cone is stuck to the fwd gear due lack of oil... my questions?
1. Where will the oil I’ve added have gone?
2. How likely is it I’ll get lucky and free it or will I do damage if I bang it with a ‘persuader’ ie hammer ?
3. If I’m really up the **** does anyone know how much distance I’d need to slide the gearbox away from the engine to remove it?
Thanks 🙂

Alsi :
Yes, I suspect the internal mechanism has stuck due to the lack of oil.
You might try a very light tapping on the selector lever to try to free it. It might just work, but tap lightly.
To remove the box, you will have to disconnect the final drive (of course) and remove the final drive coupling, them slide the propshaft as far aft as it will go.
There should be enough clearance to disconnect the box mounting bolts and remove the box.
As regards the oil level, that is puzzling. A call to Bukh would be in order, methinks.

Hi
I had the same problem with my BW 6 gearbox on a 1973 dv20 it ended up to be simple adjustment.

There are two small adjusting screws on the port side near the top of the gearbox with lock nuts. I had to heat these to release the locktight they then moved easily. These screws control the movement of the selector fork, too much movement and the selector gets stuck. I seem to remember that the forward screw is at the rear of the gearbox and reverse at the front. I found the the ideal point of adjustment is when is very little “clonk” when you select a gear.

I seem to remember I had to move the engine and gearbox shafts backwards and forwards while trying to move the gear lever to release the gear.

Re the oil level. I found that you need to remove the filler plug and then check the level at the dip stick or there seems to be an air lock stopping the oil getting to dip stick tube. I though I had lost the oil also and then filled with a measured amount of oil and found I had over filled.
