Stupid Anchor Light Question

I’ve never anchored overnight my little boat before, and I don’t have a permanent anchor light.

I have one of these, and I thought I could run it up a stay with a spare halyard:

Portable LED Stern Navigation Light

It’s a 360ļ white light visible to 2 nm so I think that fulfills the the USCG requirements, right?

My next question is, would you want it pointing down or pointing up? If I just dangle it from the halyard it will point down, but I could attach its mounting pole which would weight it so that it would point up.

It’s probably a moot question, since I’ll likely add a permanent anchor light before I do any overnight anchoring (I’ve already run the wiring up the mast).

But I’m curious what people think.

Iíve used the same thing on occasion when my masthead light was on the fritz....just make sure you have batteries that will keep it on through the night!

Re: Stupid Anchor Light Question

Thats similar to the davis light.
Only negative is that it can be blocked by the mast...180 directly opposite

Re: Stupid Anchor Light Question

I cant get the link to work in Europe

I had an emergency anchor light for a while of a LED in a coke bottle plugged into a cigarette lighter socket in the cockpit.
It worked fine till I could get a new one up the mast.

Note that the Colregs does not say it must be at mast top. It says that theres gotta be white light visible all round. think about it.

Then when you go permanent then, yes, the best place is mast top.

In ye old days it was a lantern swinging off some rope in the fore-triangle.

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

Re: Stupid Anchor Light Question

I have an LED fixture that I haul up on the backstay so that I don't have to use the incandescent bulb at the top of the mast. I ALWAYS raise it so that it illuminates the deck/cockpit and so the other boobs on the water after dark can see that there is a boat under it.

I had 6 all round the lifelines. They showed the shape of the boat close up. Not Colregs 2nms but they wernt anchor lights. I had one of those as well

So we have one vote for pointing it down, so that it adds a little light to the boat for extra visibility.

I was fixated on it pointing up, because that's how anchor lights on the top of the mast are, but there doesn't really seem to be any reason for it.

The only downside I can think of with having the light point down is that if you're trying to enjoy some time in the cockpit staring at the stars you're going to have that anchor light glaring at you...
