Very squeaky steering

My Island packet 35 worm gear steering started squeaking really bad. I have lubed the heck out of every moving part and applied gear grease where applicable. I can’t pinpoint where the noise is coming from. And it’s really loud and annoying. The wheel moves freely, I have not run aground, and not all spots along the wheel movement make noise, mostly the middle position (of course). Any ideas? Could it be the packing?

Re: Very squeaky steering

I would suggest that you may have a bearing that needs lubrication if not replacement. Otherwise, there could be a place where the worm gear is attached (bolted?) to the boat that has worn slightly and the two pieces of the worm gear are no longer mated correctly. A small shim could fix this.

Thanks for the suggestions, Capta. Where would that shim go? I remember reading somewhere about adjusting the worm gear to eliminate loose play.

If I'm not mistaken, and it's been decades since I've worked on a worm gear, one part should be attached to the boat at the rudder stock with some pretty heft through or lag bolts. Any of these could have worked slightly loose which could account for the squeak. The shim would go between the worm gear at the bolt hole and the wood the bolt goes into.

Re: Very squeaky steering

I think that I found the problem. It was the upper bearing, the one in cockpit floor. I lifted the retaining rings and lubed the heck out of it. It’s quiet now. I used the stethoscope from my blood pressure meter to isolate the noise.
