LRAD for sailboat?

Anyone ever used or seen a sonic gun used for anti piracy purposes?

No, but thought about something similar.

You have any actual products to look at?

33' Brewer, Murray 33, steel cutter
44' Pape, Steelmaid, cc steel cutter

I haven't seen any. I've seen them used on larger vessels though. It seems like the ideal tool. I've looked around online a bit and couldn't find anything other than a few videos or articles about them.

Just use a Potato Gun/ Cannon. That way the pirates will know that you're a Crazy Redneck and won't mess with you!

You shoot sonic gun, they return fire with something more conventional. Don’t see the advantage.

Re: LRAD for sailboat?

I just don't understand why people on these forums waste their time worrying about defending themselves, especially with an astronomically expensive system as you propose, so frequently when statistically, it is a heck of a lot more dangerous for them to get in their car twice a day for their commute to and from work than it is likely they will need to defend themselves from folks with bad intentions, on their cruising boat.
Being informed, route planning and common sense beat defence ten times over.

"Any idiot can make a boat go; it takes a sailor to stop one." Spike Africa aboard the schooner Wanderer in Sausalito, Ca. 1964.
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Re: LRAD for sailboat?

I think it's natural to worry about perceived threat and perceived necessities before starting out on a long cruising life.

The media for pirates, the sailing media and forums for extenuating necessities.

Most people before they go cruising 'fit out', 'refit', upgrade, prepare, etc their boat. But 90% of the money spent is on BS they think they need.

It's much better to sail off for a year and then upgrade with the things one actually needs.

It's only 'on the road' do you work out the real risk Vs reward ratios.

One of my basic rules is that every bit of junk I buy must have a dual usage.
So for piracy there has been no sucessful attack in the Caribbean where people have defended themselves with normal flare guns. When I upgraded my flares I bought 2 plastic USCG Approved flare guns with lots of flare shells. 2 uses, safety and piracy.

[no I don't meant stupid illegal dangerous steel sleeves firing shotgun shells]

But I see nothing wrong with investigating ideas. If the LRAD is now $100 and it can also play music then I am all for it.
