Navionics -Android

I don't use this app much... but at home I occasionally will want to examine a harbor in detail... measure a distance etc.

So I opened it and see that it nothing like what I remember... no depths... no tools... it's like a nothing... useless.

I am quite sure this is not how this looked and worked on my phone.... so

Did I screw something up? If so can I revert to the working app?

If not.... did Navionics "disable" the app? If so what do I do to get it back? Buy a newer different version?

ooops...

It seems to have returned.... not quite... No lat long lines or cursor lat lon...

pay attention... someone's life depends on it

There are occasional updates....do you do them?
Occasionally my settings disappear or I redefine them...go into that area and confirm.

Re: Navionics -Android

My Navionics needed takes time to download a new map area. So, maybe the map area hasn't downloaded yet? To dow load a new map area, you have to select the area you want to download.

Navionics uses vector charts, so you need to be adequately zoomed in to get full depth information

Do you see a lat lon or a fix position in lat lon?

Re: Navionics -Android

There is "Navionics" which is a paid subscription service application, which you must paid for annually. Then there is Boating HD Marine and Lakes which looks just like Navionics but is a free app with less "features."

Could be your paid subscription lapsed?

Also I attempted to take screenshots of my Boating HD application and it apparently is disabled on the app. I had never tried it before but it surely seems they went out of their way to disable it.

I am using iOS, so it likely is different than android. I have historically been an android user (and supported our work android phones), but have recently (last 4 months) gone iPhone because my new employer only provides iPhones for use, and to learn to support the devices it made sense for me to own one. The applications are very similar between platforms though.

I have been debating getting a chartplotter for my 32, but I'm on an inland lake and not sure how useful it'd be. I may very well be best served with a proper charging port and a nice clamp for my phone at the wheel. The Boating application seems to work well for me in this case.

Sounds about right. I did pay for the app but haven't been billed in ages and I understand that they don't support it or something.. and might have disabled some features. I don't understand the tech.... and I don't even remember the features it had when "new" to me.

Having said that... and something I written before in this forum... I don't use many of the bells and whistles packed into charting programs,m plotters and apps. All I want these things for is to graphically see my boat on a chart with soundings... the track and the heading and course line. From this I can mentally compute tacks and so forth... steer toward a waypoint and the most useful... follow or reference historical tracks. I do have an old fixed mount chartplotter below which displays AIS, RADAR and where I may set a waypoint which is used to see things like TTG, CTW and SOG and compare that to boat speed thru the water. Both navionics and plotter show currents which I wonder about their accuracy. My first cockpit plotter was a small Garmin iQue3600 I picked up used with charts. I love some of its features like panning and zooming. I replaced it with a under the dodger winch mounted stand alone B&G Zeus which I stow below when not sailing.

This serves my type of sailing well as I don't work from behind the helm... I use an AP 99+% of the time underway.
