Yanmar 2gm Tranny separation help!!

Hi Folks... I have to remove my trans from my block for rebuild. Tried in place... NG... couldn't get to the bottom to pry! Unable to wedge the trans off the block from top & sides so I had to pull it out into the cabin... OUCH.

With access all about the bellhousing I can only get about 1/8" gap. Shim shingles...NG. Cut a pair of long oak wedges... NG. Plastic... small & large...NG. Every screwdriver & even a wonderbar. I have even suspended the engine(just barely... over *lots* of padding) slightly and provided much prying as well as pounding on wedges and pounding the tranny with a dead-blow hammer all about... Did I mention the penetrating Oil????

I am wondering if I can keep driving under the inside lip of the bell housing. It looks like a wedge will be 'behind' the damper disc. Is that OK?? Should I be driving from all sides 'till she pops... or working about in a circle with 1 wedge? Any & all help appreciated. Cash offers also considered Thanks!

Removing 2gm transmission

I don't want to sound a smart ass but.
Are you sure you got all the bolts out? The ones at the bottom port side are difficult to see if your access is stbd. Position yourself in front of the engine and you can reach over the engine and feel the bolts all the way round.
With all the bolts out there is nothing to stop it sliding out.
I've done it several times. Don't force it. If all the bolts are out the only thing that could hold it is if the input shaft is seized in the damper and that is hard to imagine.
Good luck.
Bill

Jack, Careful, I think that housing is aluminum....whats happening is the trans. shaft is froze to the damper plate. If you look at the top of the bell housing you'll see a vent, get a die grinder or similar and remove the two spokes of the vent. This will give you a bit more room work.

Hi Mate,

did the same job last week. billangiep is right, knock out a few spokes of the vent. Then you can get a number 12 socket in and unbolt the drive plate from the bell housing. I think there's six bolts. You'll need to turn the engine to line up each bolt with the hole you've made in the bell housing. Then the trannie will pop right out with some gentle persuasion. Then you've got a drive plate stuck on the spline. Some WD40 and a pipe should free it from the spline but my mechanic said 50% of drive plates break before they're unfrozen.

Good Luck!
