coastal or off shore weather forecasts ?

If you are traveling down the Atlantic coast and venture out of VHF range how does one get hurricane and weather forecasts and is it possible to get downloaded hurricane tracking charts for current storms ?

thanks

There are lots of sources if you can receive SSB :

- the USCG has both Offshore and High Seas Forecasts which are broadcast on several HF frequencies on a regular schedule (check their website);

- WLO in LA re-transmits these broadcasts on their marine frequencies; check their schedule online;

- several ham nets broadcast the WX....the Waterway Net on 7268LSB daily beginning at 0745 Eastern time, the Maritime Mobile Service Net on 14300USB daily on the half hour, etc.;

- there are weather nets on the marine SSB frequencies, like the Bahamas WX Net on 4003 USB at, I believe, 0720 AST;

- WWV broadcasts a brief WX report every hour on 5, 10, 15, and 20 mHz -- check their schedule; and

- the Hurricane Net operates on 14325 continuously whenever a hurricane is threatening the U.S. mainland

In addition to the various websites noted above, you can find detailed times and schedules and stations here: http://docksideradio.com/wefax.htm

We used t-mobile internet up to 8 miles off. You can download UGRIB.COM, and it is pretty accurate for a couple of days, or Passageweather......i2f

You can also download grib files from saildocs using email via SSB or satphone.

Ugrib is a very good free program. OpenCPN will also read grib files.
