Reliance 44 chainplate replacement

I'm looking at purchasing a Reliance 44 (ketch) and the survey revealed that all the chainplates are heavily corroded. Because the Reliance has upper and lower chainplate sections - the lower being glassed in the hull, it makes labor the major factor in replacing. This would also require some cabinetry removal. I'm trying to get a handle on how much this would cost. Because this is such an important structural element, I would want to have it done professionally. My guess is that it would cost $10k - $15k.

Am I in the right ballpark?

Thanks.Reliance 44 chainplate replacement-chainplate.jpg

I wouldn't even begin to guess. Once you have to remove cabinetry the cost is just up to the local yard. There is no general rule I could suggest to you.

What I would suggest is while you have it out, switch to titanium chain plates instead of stainless. They won't corrode in the future, so you never have to deal with it again.

Re: Reliance 44 chainplate replacement

Thanks. My understanding is that the chainplates (original) are not stainless - most likely because they're glassed into the hull and not exposed. I like the titanium idea though... a few bucks up front to save a lot of money later.

Thanks, Dan
