"BS - who the hell cares what a bunch dead guys from days long gone had to say? "
That's exactly like saying "Who cares if there are human habitations currently being studied by archaeologists, 300 meters below the current sea level?"
When you have studied the past, and been able to find repeating trends and patterns, you can do a much better job at guessing what is going to happen, or going to work, or fail to work, in the near future.
"He who does not study history is condemned to relive it." Or something very similar to that. Men who have been respected for their wisdom, knowledge, and logical observations for a couple of hundred years, generally could impart some of that wisdom on the population today. Well, the parts who are capable of learning, and even those men didn't think the majority could.
Anyone who studied Prohibition could tell you how the current "war on drugs" would run. And for nearly 50 years, every presidential, congressional, or similar commission appointed on the topic has said the same thing. Prohibition will accomplish exactly what it did accomplish: A rise in crime, and nothing useful in any other way.
But no, that's almost as useless as asking the USCG "Do PFDs really save lives?" and ignoring all the historical evidence of what they've painstakingly studied and recorded, because after all, lots of them are or shortly will be just more Old Dead Men.

Bah Bah Bah lets try to use distraction Bah bah

You have any other quotes from long dead people that you want to apparently use to not need to follow laws as that was what you were trying to argue against.

This is veering towards the political. Please consider where you are posting.

For starters tdw doesn't have that luxury since he is a moderator.

You may not be aware that SailNet has a cesspool for political, religious, and similar discussions. Threads that deteriorate into those subjects demonstrably drag down all of SailNet. We have seen that time and again. Personally I would prefer just deleting the garbage and after a warning or two ban transgressors. Unfortunately from my perspective PRWG exists to collect the detritus.

Firearms is one of the subjects that can start out as a reasonable discussion and spiral into useless twaddle. I've certainly seen it before and this one is on the verge.

So the old guard drops out of the discussion because we know where it is going and take bets on how long it will take. This one is dead and just doesn't know it yet.

What about being held at GUNPOINT do you NOT understand? Or are you superman, impervious to bullets?

I was certain that my post was so over the top that no one would take it seriously. I guess I was wrong.

Next time, try not to duck.

OK, guys... sorry to confirm the conspiracy theorists, but as this thread was (predictably) going off the rails and the original question appears to have been answered it's now closed.

If you must (once again) endlessy 'debate' weaponry, self defense etc take it to the appropriate forum (surely the NRA hosts such a discussion group??)
