Question My first boat, Tanzer 22

Just got my boat in the water recently, bought the boat almost 5 months ago and didn't have much time to work on her, but have been doing reading for 8 months or so. She has some issues mainly with the bulkheads having some discoloration (possibly rot, but from what I read/been told on T22's it's a 1 day job), as well as foggy port windows and leaky ones at that. Rigging seems sound from what I was told by various people I met at the marina, I work as a mechanic and it came with 2 Evinrude Fisherman 6hp motors, so I have one working 65 2 stroke outboard, long shaft. Prop seems fine...deck seems really solid, and the hatches don't leak although the chainplates do.

One thing I am worried about is that the top area of the companionway, while inside the cabin, the fiberglass has cracked around the bottom of the hatch opening - how bad is this? It's a good 12 inches long and curves around the corner of the heatch on the ceiling...

Anyway all in all been really cool learning so far. Glad to have joined the forum

Any other T22 owners? Any thing I should look out for? It is a 1982 built boat

Re: My first boat, Tanzer 22

I also bought a T22 (1986) last summer but I've yet to splash.

Port replacement wasn't too bad. I never found a source for the rubber seals that hold them in so I went with Dow 795. I guess we'll see how that holds up once in the water.

Next project is to find a way to assess the condition of the swing keel / CB.

Re: My first boat, Tanzer 22

Hey welcome to the forum! Last summer I decided sailing seemed like fun so my wife and I bought a '78 Tanzer 7.5m. We love that boat and are counting down the days till the ice and snow break so we can launch back out on Huron.

Do you have some pictures of the cracking? I don't know about if that's a common issue but depending on where it is, and if it's spreading (is it all the way through or just surface?), it may be best to stop it. If it's just through the top layer of glass (not just normal gel-coat crazing) it may be worth carefully stop drilling the crack so it won't travel further then using a dremmel carve out the crack wider and then fill with epoxy.

I say that having no real idea on the severity or any other issues below that crack (delamination? rotten core? water?). Pics and some exploration into the crack will help. One of my lazarette lids had a "crack" in it and when I went to dremmel it out and fill it in I realized the entire lid was delaminated and absolutely FULL of water. The fix wasn't awful but it turned into more than "just a crack" in that case.

Some youtube videos, nothing fancy

Re: My first boat, Tanzer 22

I am not familiar with Tanzer 22s, but if the bulkheads also serve as chainplate anchors for the side stays, that possible bulkhead rot may be a much more serious issue.

You're only as strong as your weakest link... Solid rigging attached to punky bulkheads is a risk.

Re: My first boat, Tanzer 22

The bulkheads are for sure suffereing some rot. The Tanzer 22 commonly leaks at the plates from what I've been told...T22 bulkheads slide right out once unbolted, and can be replaced in a day and do not need to be tabbed back in, I believe I can handle this no problem, have all tools and experience with woodworking. The chainplates come through the deck and bolt directly to the wooden bulkheads, and I do know that I will be doing the bulkheads before anything else.
The window sealing suggestion is good, I also can't find the rubbers. Will use lexan to replace fogged windows.

The crack concerns me and it is pretty big, I will get some pictures the next time I am up there (hopefully this weekend!), I do have a video I took of the crack so I will see if I can clip out a piece of that and upload it to Youtube.

She's my learner/starter...sure learned a lot so far.

Thank you guys

You can find Tanzer parts go to

You can ask the questions directly to Steve Thom, he helped find an expert on old instruments used by the Tanzer boats.
