Funny I was just talking to a guy at work yesterday about Spam musubi! I love it. Awesome hiking food. My brother lives on Maui and I eat that like every day when I am visiting him. Come to think of it I am going to see him at my dad's birthday, have to have him bring some along. Have a loco Moco for breakfast and you won't be hungry till about 3:00 in the afternoon, perfect time to pull the Spam Musibi out of your bag!

Talk about thread drift. This one's no longer about food, it's about SPAM.

Though I suppose it's one of the few types of food that you can write loads of Haiku about, say, whilst becalmed or adrift:

Blue can of steel
what promise do you hold?
salt flesh so ripe

Can of metal, slick
soft center, so cool, moistening
I yearn for your salt

Twist, pull the sharp lid
Jerks and cuts me deeply but
Spam, aaah, my poultice.

silent, former pig
one communal awareness
myriad pink bricks

you wait to feed me
stoic vigil on the shelf
ah my vibrant pink

LOL - I didn't mean to spam the thread with Spam! But it's been entertaining and educational.

Other protein sources that work for us are egg salad and tuna salad - great for bread, crackers, wraps. Hard cheeses and deli meats. Protein bars, granola bars, cookies, brownies... well, if you make your cookies and brownies with protein powder they can count.

Re: Favourite meals and snacks to have whilst sailing?

We are headed out for a trip to anchor of the Tred Abon across from Oxford. Not much wind though so that may change the destination. Seems like this spring it's either blowing like snot or it's like Lake Chesapeake.

We haven't inflated the dinghy yet so no ride to town this trip.

Makes no difference as we are out on the water. Picked up some nice fresh red grouper from Wegmans for dinner on the grill with a fresh mandarin/ black bean/ ginger/ and green onion salsa , pencil thin asparagus/ roasted garlic and homemade red bliss dill potato salad. Grilled pineapple for desert.

I have a number of cookbooks, and one of my favorites is the Official Navy Cookbook from 1944. It has some interesting comments here and there: "...Soup is one means of getting men to eat vegetables."

This isn't Betty Crocker's salmon croquette territory. Basic recipes are for serving 100; proportions may need to be adjusted up or down as necessary.

As for Spam Haiku...

As long as you stay downwind of me with the tuna salad.

Tuna should either be properly cooked (threatened briefly with an extremely hot pan after being slathered with blackened spices) or properly NOT cooked (sliced thin and served with wasabi/shoyu).
