This sequence of events makes no sense :

You stowed the sails
You lost the halyards
You motorsailed with genoa
You dropped the genoa

Not all of these things can be true, so I am hesitant to learn anything.

i stowed the main
the main halyard came of the mast in the wind
yes you can sail with an engine to help point the boat
I let down the genny
whats so hard to understand i said my writing skills are not very good.

off of sugarloaf key ,look on the map hogs channel is 2 miles off shore and about 3 miles from the reef you can google map it and see the reef.after the reef it drops to 300 to 1000 foot.

I think you did very well in the situation.
Disasters don't happen with just one problem but a bunch of them... a causal chain.

So don't brow beat yourself. You did well, and were pretty safe when the Coast Guard turned up.
