Google maps says that it is 82 km from the airport to Sidney which involves taking a car across the straight on a ferry.

From the airport to Granville Island is shown as being 12 km on the tram.
The Victoria International Airport is in Sidney.

Re: Sailing Around Vancouver B.C.

But we're not flying into Victoria. We were advised by the charter people to fly into Vancouver Int'l. And it's also cheaper to fly into Vancouver. Plus they had the boat that fit our needs at the Granville Island docks (Smaller 31 ft, least expensive boat that would accommodate an instructor).

Great area, you'll have a lot of fun

Vancouver -> Sidney is a long trip, but there are a lot of great places for an overnight stop that are very pretty. For a 'cruise and learn' dealio, it's kinda perfect as crossing the Georgia Strait would be interesting if you've never been on the ocean before!

I'm imagining that the cell phone will probably only receive a signal for a few miles out of port in Vancouver and will be pretty useless during most of the crossing across the sound. I'm wondering about service on the islands like Bowen Island and the smaller ones.

I appreciate any other information that people have to offer about sailing in this area.
Hi Midwesterner, make sure you give us a blow by blow on your adventure. I sailed for years around those parts, winter and summer, in a 35 foot pilot house sailboat. It's truly some of the best sailing in the world. Vancouver Island is Canada's Hawaii.

If you've got a cell phone or tablet with a real GPS chip built in, a lot of the Nav programs will work without cell service. Some companies in the States have good roaming packages, I use T-mobile for the US, Canada, Mexico plan.

Spending a day or two on the boat, tied to a dock, goes a long way in mitigating the chance of sea sickness, though I realize you haven't got time for that.

Have fun and I hope you and your wife love it.

Thanks goat.
As it turns out, we paid the extra fee to do early boarding and will spend the first night on the boat before making way the next morning.

I completed my five day Cruise and Learn sailing trip from Vancouver to Howe Sound anchoring in Port Graves. We sailed to Plumper Cove Marine Park then through Active Pass, to Ganges Harbor, then up to Lady Smith Bay and through the Gabriola Passage and back to Vancouver.

I anchored, I moored, I docked, I motored some and sailed whenever we could. It was a very nice time.
