Re: First off shore coastal run

Sandbar, it sound like the shroud was a equipment failure and not due to the winds. Usually a failure of the shroud like that brings down the mast. And that is usually because it happens in high stress to the standing rigging. I am glad you didn't have that type of day. You probably need to look over all your standing rigging very carefully and tension or tune it. Glad you made it to your new home.

Ten four. I need to hook up with a more experienced sailor in my marina and make friends with that Person. You know offer my hands as "crew" for the captain lol

Re: First off shore coastal run

When I am new to a marina, I BBQ. And I offer other mixers just to get to know people. Although you probably do not have the means- I do pay my more experienced crew when they go out with me, and I always express my gratitude when they do. The old Captains on my block are happy to see me, and I help them whenever I can. They are a proud lot, but will accept some $$ if given discretely for their knowledge as you pass a troubled spot for the first time.
The result? Since mooring my boat in Oregon in 2011, I have learned a ton about maintenance, the ocean and local bar behavior. I have crossed the Columbia bar now many times, and other bars also. I respect that they can kill, and that the ocean is a foreign environment that must also be respected. I also see that most everyone that makes their living on the ocean can be admired in some way.

In the future, remember the words of Captain Ron. "If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there".

Re: First off shore coastal run

A couple of take away points for me:
1) A new boat on a shakedown cruise needs careful attention to systems (in this case standing rigging) inspections.
2) Weather windows need to examined closely.
3) Boats are built for sailing (at least most of them), so at some point you have to let the dock lines go and . (well) go.

With that said, Cap'n Sandbar, I'm so glad you had a wonderful trip. You'll probably remember it forever.
