I had enough points saved up for a free hotel room, so the Admiral and I decided to go to Newport, RI for the weekend. Coincidentally (really, I did not plan this; no kidding), the Candy Store Cup was being held there this weekend. I had never heard of this regatta, but apparently, it was a race that ran concurrently with the Newport Bucket Race; since the Newport Bucket is no more, the decision was to continue the Candy Store race and make that a mega yacht party.
So, we're on Easton's Beach on Saturday, and I see these giant sailboats heading in towards the beach. As they get closer, it becomes clearer just how HUGE these things are. I later learned that they had two classes of yachts: one for those >70 meters, and one for those <70 meters. There was a Perini Navi ketch, and at least two schooner yachts, one with three masts. They came within a couple of miles of the beach, spinnakers flying, to round a mark and then crack off on a reach. Watching those giants maneuver, dousing and hoisting sail was a sight to behold. I am so glad I keep a pair of binocs in the beach bag.
We wound up at dinner at a restaurant right near the Newport Shipyard, which was where the super yachts were berthed. We took a walk over there after dinner, and snapped a couple of low light pics of some of the boats, taken from a public pier right next to the yacht basin. Check out the regatta website for more info. What a treat.
