Re: Phillipeans to feed Pirates to the Sharks

It is good to know that there is still an international leader who understands how evil must be dealt with. I am pretty sure that the jihadists masquerading as pirates will soon either find safer waters to pillage or will become fish food. Sharks have to eat also....

Alternately, it's too bad that the president of the Philippines is actively encouraging extrajudicial killings, and has the blood of hundreds of innocents on his hands.

Yeah I was going to say, isn't this the guy whose policies have allowed lynch mobs which have led to hundreds or thousands of innocent people being murdered?

In a cruel and brutal world it takes a brute to keep peace.
I do not see a downside to making the modern pirates walk the plank. They deserve it.
This guy has a phenomenal popularity among the people he rules for a reason.
I appreciate that a lot more than opinions of Western pundits.

It is very easy to pass judgement on folks living in a brutal and primitive society when you are warm, comfortable, safe, and well fed. Go live in the third world as see how your Pollyanna views are accepted. Can't we all just get along???? Research Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq if you don't understand my statement.

Re: Phillipeans to feed Pirates to the Sharks

I completely understand the emotional satisfaction of the approach toward feeding pirates to the sharks and allowing vigilantism. However, the problem is when this approach gets it wrong. Lot's of cattle rustlers were hung, without trial. It could be you, even though you know you did nothing wrong. There is no protection for the innocent.

Jurisprudence is a man made concept. It's slow and imperfect too, but it's what defines civility. Indeed, it is designed to let 10 guilty parties go free, before incarcerating 1 innocent. Sure it could be improved and should be, but killing folks on sight, with no due process, is a bad idea. You kill a member of my family that you thought was doing wrong, so I kill a member of yours and make the same claim. We've been there before. It does not end, when the bad people are dead. It never ends, until jurisprudence puts an end to it.

Until US and other 'civilized' naval powers step in to fight piracy with all their wonderful and fair jurisprudence system, I will applaud any effort to make sailing safer.

Good example. The US Navy has very specific rules of engagement that must be vetted and followed. In fact, they and other countries have seemingly been very effective off the coast of Somalia. However, it's not practical, for the combined population the of all navy's, to police the entire globe. Nevertheless, if the Philopeans had these rules, it would be different.

Further, what makes you feel safer, when your neighbor can shoot you, if they think you are breaking the law?
