Beware--Tampa Bay Sewage Spills

During the summer months through September, when not cruising, to escape the heat on weekends we normally sail the yacht over to Egmont Key, anchor out south of the Pilot Station, and spend the day swimming and sunning in the cooling breezes. These days we cannot. The water has turned a filthy greasy brown with a distinctive odor and is unsafe due to the repeated sewerage spills into the Bay by local municipalities and particularly the city of St. Pete.

See Hermine's heavy rains causing sewage woes across Tampa Bay | Tampa Bay Times and worse,

Whistleblower: St. Pete officials were warned about sewage spills

The City of St. Pete is a particularly grievous offender as, rather than repairing and upgrading an aging waste treatment plant, it shut it down, exacerbating the problem but all the while planing to spend upwards of $100 million dollars on a replacement for the old, now demolished, Pier "to promote tourism" (although the stench of untreated sewage will have a decidedly opposite effect).

N'any case, for those of you in the area, you need be aware of the situation and stay clear of the water.

Oh, and be sure to keep you head through-hulls locked closed against the possibility of being fined for polluting....

Re: Beware--Tampa Bay Sewage Spills

The short-sightedness of the St Petersburg city council on this is just astonishing. Or it would be if this sort of thing wasn't "business as usual" for St Petersburg and all the other municipalities in the Tampa Bay area.

One thing you can be sure of... Someone out there has been lining his pockets very nicely over the last few years with all of the money that was supposed to be spent to maintain the sewage treatment system!

Re: Beware--Tampa Bay Sewage Spills

makes me wonder...

do they get regular fines, just pay them off and go on about their business?

I wonder if that affects the quality of seafood caught in the area? (Rhetorical question)
