Re: Bon Voyage SEA LIFE

Looks like Mark and SEA LIFE have returned from the sea and have paused at a dock in North Carolina. Which just happens to be located next to a Hooters bar. Why am I not surprised.

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

I'm always a little puzzled @ What makes the Jersey Shore so intolerable to sailors ? Granted, some of the inlets can be a little tricky. But, at one end there's the Atlantic Highlands a nice easy harbor, with a pefectly nice walkable town, a natiional recreation area, Sandy Hook and beachfront trails for walking and biking. On the other end is Cape May, arguably one of the prettiest beachfront towns on the east coast. in the right weather, you can easily sail along the beach it's entire length. Compared to some of the inlets on the south shore of Li, or North Carolina's, NJ's inlets and coastlines are tame. Sitings of Humpbacks and Pods of Dolphins are a regular occurance and the fishing is excellent. Just wait for a favorable forecast, like any other passage, and it's a piece of cake. Delaware Bay is another story but there are worse fates than sitting in Cape May, waiting for a window to get up the bay.

Re: Bon Voyage SEA LIFE

Too soon to head back to the Islands, especially with a developing storm headed that way. I'm hoping Mark will come on down to Georgia, where I have a slip waiting for him for the rest of hurricane season. We have free beer everyday, beer and wine on Mon, Wed, and Friday (happy hour 5-7Pm), free laundry, free wifi, free pumpout, free marina bikes.....and some other Aussie cruisers to hang out with. Plus, I'm the new Dockmaster!!! hehe Brunswick Landing Marina: A liveaboard's paradise in Georgia

PS- Easy inlet to St. Simons Sound.

Re: Bon Voyage SEA LIFE

Jersey shore...
First, all marinas there are pricey so anchoring is preferred.
Cape May has a decent anchor spot but it gets crowded and the traffic wakes the hell out of you. Atlantic city has all the wake plus a strong current and noise from casinos. The rest of the inlets are less than stellar. So you sit at Cape May and wait for a clear shot north. That stretch of ocean to Sandy Hook or Block Isl gets stirred up rather quickly and is either flat calm or sloppy seas with wind often against you for at least part. The commercial traffic isnt too bad but the fishing boats are thick and do not care about you and refuse to talk to you on the vhf.

The Ches, LIS, NE amd Maine all offer much much much better environment for cruising and sailing so the NJ coast is something to endure to get to the good stuff.
