1988 Irwin 38 Mk II Center or 1989 Endeavour Center Cockpit

I am currently looking at these two boats. I would love to hear your thoughts on either or both boats which you might recommend over the other and why? I will mostly be sailing with my better half most of the time with our children and grandchildren along from time to time. The majority of our sailing will be the Florida coast and the Bahamas and possibly a few islands along the Thorny Path.

Thanks James

get the best Irwin, in the best condition you have budget for. I am partial to the Irwin, but have sailed and spent time on both boats. I find the Irwin of better construction and not as narrow as other boats of that time. Much more comfortable at sail and at anchor than the Endeavour. Both boats of this timeframe will likely need going over for needed repairs and updates. They both sail "heavier" than current boats, and are slower to respond to changing conditions.

maintenance logs and such would be very nice in helping to decide. I would go over them thoroughly with a critical eye.

Practical Sailor has a review of the Endeavour 37 (if you haven't found it already):

... and did a feature article on the 42 in their February issue (you have to be a subscriber):

For what it's worth, Ted Irwin helped start Endeavour yachts as a friend of Endeavour co-founder John Brooks by providing the molds from the Irwin 32 to produce the first Endeavour 32. Also, the Endeavour 40 and 43 cc's were designed by Bob Johnson who later went on to found Island Packet. In any case, the late 80's Irwin cc's and Endeavour cc's may have more in common than not and therefore condition will likely outweigh manufacturer, as it does in many cases.

Irwin is a beast and a tank, the endeavor is, to m'y opposion not quite as steady but.... you can look at Kijiji.ca in Barrie there is one for sale at about 36000$ all done up for the Bahamas already and the sailor is too old to take her out, took him to much time to set her up and now he is sick. Now that a bummer
