Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

I haven't launched yet, but the fuel docks at my marina are about to be breached, and the north eastern shore of the lake is in real trouble. Anyone with any first hand experience out there?

Re: Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

I've done shakedown sails on all 3 boats (BH 21, P16 and WB 8) in eastern Ontario in the last two weeks. I wore a dry suit. I'd say sailing conditions near shore are dicey.

As George of the Jungle said "watch out for that tree!".

Re: Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

Yep, just helped put the docks in at my marina last weekend. It is high, peaks at the beginning of June so there is a good chance the level will go higher. Rather have this than what we had last season with low water levels.
Hoping to launch this Saturday if the weather cooperates, at haul out last year we had a couple of the bigger boats get stuck due to the low water levels.
Sure had a miserable day last Saturday putting the last coat of paint on the topsides, just about got blown off a ladder at one point!
LOL now I think I have to do the decks, hull looks too good!

My ladder got blown away while i was in the cabin doing some work. I had to hook up my swim ladder to sort of climb down gracefully. It's happened twice. Working on your boat when it's on the hard is more of a pain than I realized!

Good idea, for a couple of reasons, to tie your ladder to the boat (a stanchion or two).

After the refit we have decided to sell Ainia. We want something smaller that would be could for the light summer winds of Lake Ontario, although we plan to spend at least a couple of winters in the Caribbean before heading north.

Re: Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

Have a friend who plans to move their boat from Lake Ontario through the Oswego, Erie and Finger Lake canals in May, but thinks they aren't going to get it done until at least June, due to lake and canal levels.

Good to hear it doesn't seem like another drought year up there anyway.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

I launched 10 days ago in Belleville. Water is much higher than when we dredged our way back into our marina last fall. Iím loviní it!

The variation in water levels is pretty amazing though. We must be at least 4 feet higher now than in the fall.

Re: Holy Lake Ontario water levels!

From what I read, lake Ontario is up 18" over average datum, and up 15 inches from this date last year...and expected to peak out after an additional 3-5" in May/June. The highest since 1998 at least.

It's hard to believe after 2012 that things would rise so much so fast.

Could be a money saver, you could just float off your cradle and save the cost of a travellift/crane.
