Re: Book?

Please pardon my ignorance - what's an SD car? (I googled it and got info on vehicles in South Dakota - and I'm sure that's not what you meant.)

Re: Book?

I like your website.
I think it's informative, helpful, and fits in the how-to-do-it category for people starting off.
You have a lot of knowledge to share...and to leverage.

Re: Book?

The limit of a website is that one needs internet access, which sailors often lack. A paid downloadable version of the website may be a moneymaker. That's essentially the same thing as a book, but it may be easier/cheaper to get to market and could be sold on the website. I download a ton of reference material to my iPad.

With today's free blogs, I think tips and tricks are hard to sell. Part of the marketing campaign should be online involvement, establishing a reputation as a pro.

Folks would and do pay for Maine Sail's ideas/input, they would never pay for mine.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: Book?

Frankly... we should be at the stage with information is FREE and not something to make money from. Invent a product that people want and sell that.

Re: Book?

"we should be at the stage with information is FREE"
And then, exactly who or how are we going to support entertainers and teachers, the folks who actually ARE authors, who spend considerable time and effort making the presentations that we call "books" ?
Who's going to prepare, fact-check (ooh, dirty words!), and cohesively edit all that information? Or do you just expect it to be done as a public service, by unpaid street urchins?

Case in point, look at some books on sextants and navigation. (Or, haha, mathematics in general, possibly calculus.) Some give you a headache and crossed eyes and become doorstops. Others provide truly elegant enlightenment. There is a saying that there are no bad (stupid) pupils, only bad (poor) teachers.

If an author is willing to spend days, weeks, months, of their time crafting something that will either teach me or entertain me? I don't think it is too much when they ask me to help pay their room and board for a while. Which is, funny thing, how a lot of vloggers are making some money these days. And how street musicians have, for a long time.

Same same.

Some folks want paper books. Heck, I know I prefer paper, especially when the toys crash. But I really like being able to take out a phone or tablet, and access my library anytime, any place, without dragging it around.
