Rimas

I don't know how many of you are aware of Rimas, but it is not looking good for him. Sadly, he may have drifted or sailed into a reef and is lost. There is a SAR force from FIJI that is apparently looking for him. His boat may have struck the Texas reef.

In his own words -

https://about.me/meleshyusrimas
I am a 61-year-old sailor born in Sochi on the coast of the Black sea in Russia. I have lived in many places in the world but have lived in America for many years now.

My ambitious solo sailing around the world will be continuing 100% in the end of July, 2013

The plan will be my second attempt to solo around the world. I was the first sailor to make a successful crossing in the history of the Gulf of Alaska in a San Juan 24-foot sailboat. My goal is to achieve a status in the Guinness book record of world.

Re: Rimas

Wow. No doubt I've heard about Rimas for years now over on SA. Never really followed the thread - but I hope he's okay.

Re: Rimas

8 days since his last Delorme message. If you look at the last position and consider the prevailing wind he is either wrecked on the Texas offshore reef or wrecked on the peninsula at the north end of Vanua Levu. If on Vanua Levu he might have got ashore only to be faced with a long hike to civilisation as there is no coast road and it is mostly uninhabited

I think there is a tiny chance he might have got spat out past all the reefs by the currents which do run at speed in that area but I think it unlikely.

When looking at his last message No consros tilles too damhgehere mondaz just curret pushing boat very not cllearo where end up consider that he has exaggerated things in the past to encourage people to come and rescue him.

I rather fear he is with Davy Jones.

SA has a pretty active group of posters who seek to blame his likely death on Jean and the others who facilitated his acquisition of Mimsy and his 'ability' to set sail again. Remember Rimas has had to be towed in to harbor every time, can not sail upwind and can not navigate. In bad weather he leaves his sails up and flapping and goes below.

Re: Rimas

Not much to navigate when he just floats around. I understand he has no clue how to sail yet he makes comments about being at the tiller as if he's actually doing something useful.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is gone this time.

Looks like he finally exhausted his allotment of good luck.

Re: Rimas

I'm deep into the Rimas saga.

I thought he was a goner last week, after he didn't communicate for 62 straight hours:

https://sailingfortuitous.com/lost-weekend-of-rimas/

Now it's been like 8 days since those last few messages trickled in. There's a lot of wild conjecture on SA, but I don't think anyone knows anything for sure. We don't even know if the SAR operation is for him, although it seems plausible. It's based off a tweet from https://twitter.com/VFRfiji

I'd take that Voyage of the Mimsy blog with a grain of salt too. That guy seems to employ quite a bit of poetic license. He has no more access to Rimas's inner thoughts (if such things exist) than the rest of us reading the DeLorme feed.

My Boat Log, or "blog" if you will:

Re: Rimas

Rimas is using Jack Sparrow's compass, always pointing in the direction of what the owner wants...

"I personally know Rimas but I must say that his decisions surprise me as they would any seasoned sailor. However, his apparent nonsensical, devil-may-care sailing attitude is no mystery to me. I feel his intent today as I did when we were talking together in Hilo a month ago. His heart is good and his spirit strong. And evidently he has adequate fresh water and food. So he slowly sails happily onward towards an unknown destiny which only he understands." (from the Mimsy web page)
