Re: BVI Hotel Recommenations

I've never hear of Sabastian's before, but the website looks awesome.

I would remain very suspicious, however. They are literally on the beach and had to take a direct punch in the face from a Cat 5. As the 180 mph storm approached, wind and water would be right in their face. Check it out carefully.

Re: BVI Hotel Recommenations

Personally I would not book anything in advance.

Tortola is not a big island.

Make a list if likely places if you like. Pack a little food.

Get a taxi starting around 9-10am, ask for the grand tour.

Stop in to places that look open & nice, active but not too busy, ask them pricing, if OK to show you a room, check out the beach, bar etc.

Looks nice, haggle if you like, book in, go for a swim.

But that's me, I usually make some new friends, end up staying in a nice room over the garage or something.

Brewer's Bay was my favorite, but likely all's blown away 8-(

Re: BVI Hotel Recommenations

We stayed at the Long Bay Beach Resort on Tortola a few years ago before our charter. Nice place and reasonable prices. but you really need a car.

I, myself, personally intend to continue being outspoken and opinionated, intolerant of all fanatics, fools and ignoramuses, deeply suspicious of all those who have "found the answer" and on my bad days, downright rude.

Re: BVI Hotel Recommenations

I understand Foxy's held their Old Year's Night party last night. It's fantastic that it's back online, although, I understand not a full recovery yet. I bet most of the rest of JVD is still devastated. We should have a thread with current updates on BVI USVI conditions.

Re: BVI Hotel Recommenations

The Sugar Mill, near Bombas on Tortola--but on the opposite end of the civilization scale, has been posting updates over the past few months. They initially hoped to reopen on Nov 1, then hoped to at least open the restaurant for Thanksgiving, then hoped to open on a limited scale by Dec 1, but the latest is a projected April 1 reopening. They cited problems with materials and infrastructure and have had to temper their optimism.

We've stayed there a couple of times over the years and it is a favorite of ours--especially the restaurant, but also the private beach across the road.

So, beware projections by onshore accommodations. While it would be nice to support the local economy, you don't want to be a victim of unrealistic optimism.
