Pearson P26 Rudder Shaft issues

I have a '72 Pearson P26 that i recently received from a friend of mine. It has been in the water for the last two decades and when we pulled it and brought it home to "work" on it, we noticed a few things. First it has a large amount of blisters that i will have to deal with and the entire hull is showing a very high moisture level, so it looks like skinning the entire boat below the waterline to start the drying process.
The issue currently is the rudder shaft had a lot of play in it when it was in the boat. When i pulled the rudder, the shaft has about 1/16th of a inch ware all around the base and the top where the bearings were. The shaft is aluminum and not sure the best way to repair the damage, without spending the $1800 to replace it. Looking for any good advise.

Thank you,

Unless you plan on circumnavigating, just drive 'er.

Delrin Bushings.
Go to this site and study it. Pyxis - Pearson 26
Sorry I couldn't do a better job with the link. I'm still living in a DOS world

I miss my P26. Those are pretty hardy boats. If you've already pulled it, your marina should be able to provide you names of local machine shop that could help out.

The Pyxis site contrarian posted is gold. There's also many good user forums to get help. You don't mention your location, but the Pearson club on the Chesapeake is very active.

Re: Pearson P26 Rudder Shaft issues

Be careful with how much $ you pit into if you don't plan to keep it too long - I have a Pearson 26 in Florida - luckily the rudder shaft had been fixed prior to me - boat has been re-rigged - 2 owners before me spent about $10K in upgrades - he sold boat for $5K , I bought it for $3K - in very good shape - probably sell it for $2.5K - while very good boats - they are just in that size range that makes it difficult to sell - too big for a trailer - too small for much cruising unless you like camping.
Great boat to sail and fix up if you do it yourself - just realize whatever you put into it you most likely won't get back - which is true for a lot of boats - but especially ones in the 25-30 foot range.
