Re: Beating Bad

Huh. I'd love to hear more of this story.

Quote:
John Phillip Stirling, 65, displayed signs of an overdose when U.S. Coast Guard personnel boarded his boat about 415 kilometres off Newport, Ore.
So we have a single handed sailor overdosing well offshore.

I wonder where he was coming from and going to. Was he experienced enough to be doing that trip, if he hadn't sampled a bit too much of his own product?

And why did the Coast Guard board in the first place.

My question exactly. He was 300 miles offshore. Article doesn't say, but if the vessel was Canadian flagged, the non-lawyer in me says the case against him gets thrown out.

Re: Beating Bad

I suppose it's possible he got all paranoid and called the CG on himself.

Re: Beating Bad

Someone dropped a dime on him before he left Mexico or wherever he picked up the meth. The CG can interdict any boat suspected of illegal activities no matter where it's flagged. Might be a good deal on an auction boat coming up.

Can't stop a Canadian vessel in international waters without permission from the Canadian Government. However, the article does state that his vessel, "The Mandalay" was a US registered vessel. Seems like a silly choice for smuggling.

No way I'd go near that boat at auction or anywhere else, especially since he was using on board. That stuff gets into everything, you have to have it professionally cleaned to make it safe to even be on board.

Re: Beating Bad

Way more important than residue from the dope is residue from being a known dope smuggling boat. Knew a lovely schooner that was bought at auction and rehabbed. Every where they went they got the full treatment from delayed or refused entry permission or the cops totally tossing the boat. Apparently there is a list of suspected smuggling boats that even a name change won't cure.
