Mirage 5.5 with a dagger board

A shot in the dark here - there is one for sale in Florida but has dagger board not swing keel as others - supposedly the prototype - would use for a little PHRF racing and drag to Keys - but concerned about dagger board - had a Holder 20 once with the same setup - a bear to lift keel - this one looks like it uses a small block and tackle - might have same problems - thoughts on daggerboards vs swing keels?

Re: Mirage 5.5 with a dagger board

The Mirage seems a lot like the Holder at first. Close to same displacement & sail area. Similar fractional rigs. The Holder is a bit narrower, however, and the keel on it means you got better performance, even if it was a bear to lift. The PHRF rating for a Holder 20 is 180. The Mirage with swing keel rates 246. That's a projected difference of more than a minute per mile. Of course, the daggerboard version of the Mirage may be different. It may be faster -- or it may be slower. If you're just wanting to poke around, it's a boat to poke around in.

Re: Mirage 5.5 with a dagger board

I would get a small trailer winch if raising the dagger board is a concern. Cheap and foolproof. I had a swing keel Mirage 5.5. Well made boats that sail decently. Would not hesitate to buy one again.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
