Living in a Lighthouse

Came across a great documentary by one of the Lighthouse keepers of the Hanois Lighthouse just off Guernsey in the Channel Islands, Great Britain filmed in the 1994.

Re: Living in a Lighthouse

I don't know if I could do that on a tiny spit of land in the middle of the sea...just a bit too solitary for me..I have been a lighthouse keeper for a one week span in the past, it was kinda fun. We had to pay a nominal fee, but also had to work a little bit. The rewards far outweighed the costs, and I had a wonderful time.

Re: Living in a Lighthouse

The foghorn would drive me nuts, even with good books to read. There have been automated lighthouses in our area available for sale -- cheap -- but they are operating navigational aids that are not easily accessible.

Years ago I remember seeing an ad in the Sunday Times magazine for the island lighthouse (with automatic foghorn) off Mystic CT. It said "for a special person," by which I assumed they meant deaf.

Re: Living in a Lighthouse

Reminds me of the story of the lighthouse on what is now known as Whale Rock, near the Western entrance to Narragansett Bay. All that is left today is remnants of the base. It was knocked over during the '38 hurricane and the assistant lightkeeper was killed. They came to realize the tower was never actually bolted down to the concrete base.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.
