Re: Junk or Spare?
The questions doesn't address whether the boat is kept at your marina, where you can make use of storing in your garage or local storage unit, or is a circumnavigator where you do have a much larger inventory of spares and tools. Seems like most answers above are focused on the former.
But to add something, my big boat was large enough that I pretty much kept everything, and so did the previous owners, so I had 40+ years worth of stuff onboard.
The question allows different answers for different situations. I loaded up when I moved aboard and headed to the Caribbean for 4 years. Now that Shiva is moored 50 miles from home I have kept lots of stuff on board which frankly is not needed as I can get supplies from close by marine or hardware stores or even Amazon.
Projects are approached by creating a "project bin" and placing as many of the bits needed inside the bin. Tools I can use what is on board or bring from home. Accordingly I am (too) slowly clearing out a lot of unneeded ballast. The problem is simply organizing and making an inventory of what I have and where it is. Anything is useless if you can find it and worse if you spend lots of time hunting for it... not to mention I seem to continually find new places on board for things.
I have been muttering to myself "I need to get organized" for 50 years! ;-)
pay attention... someone's life depends on it
