But to add something, my big boat was large enough that I pretty much kept everything, and so did the previous owners, so I had 40+ years worth of stuff onboard.
The question allows different answers for different situations. I loaded up when I moved aboard and headed to the Caribbean for 4 years. Now that Shiva is moored 50 miles from home I have kept lots of stuff on board which frankly is not needed as I can get supplies from close by marine or hardware stores or even Amazon.

Projects are approached by creating a "project bin" and placing as many of the bits needed inside the bin. Tools I can use what is on board or bring from home. Accordingly I am (too) slowly clearing out a lot of unneeded ballast. The problem is simply organizing and making an inventory of what I have and where it is. Anything is useless if you can find it and worse if you spend lots of time hunting for it... not to mention I seem to continually find new places on board for things.

I have been muttering to myself "I need to get organized" for 50 years! ;-)

pay attention... someone's life depends on it
