Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Before I post the expenses, I put a poll on this one and there is only 1 answer on it so it’s simple. If you want these monthly threads to continue you need to vote on the poll. Lurkers, if you are not a member join and vote, if a member and not logged in, log in and vote. If there isn’t an answer on the poll that fits for you post it in the thread (but if you do it really shows a “yes” vote )

Still in a slip in Gulfport, MS till end of month then heading to Marathon. Wife fell off dock and got hurt (broken shoulder) so there is delay while crew schedule allows them to join me somewhere on the way as my wife wasn't hip on me doing it all alone.

Did grocery, beer and supply runs as normal, but it seemed to cost less this month to be made up on restock next month.

Boat costs were high. Ordered a new mainsail, which is more than a month budget by itself, but have only paid of it as deposit. Got a $76 brand new sewing machine and have been making curtains, window covers, and dinghy chaps. I never had used a sewing machine before, but it’s not very hard to sew ugly type stuff like those. Made a new shelf in the salon, replaced a bunch of interior lights with LEDs. Had an AC seawater line clog up and that ended up a fair expense in acid, hoses, and fittings to clear up. Did a bunch of other small things that I can't remember off top of head, but can see added up to real money in little small bites.

Only fuel this month was a propane tank refill.

Entertainment includes some going to the movies, some books, Redbox rentals etc.

When My wife fell into the water her cell phone was in her pocket, so that was the end of it. At same time my old Apple 5C was kind of past it’s use by date even though it was still working. So, we both got budget new Samsung phones, but they were still $200 each.

Marina costs were a month’s slip with power and liveaboard fee.

Medical of course are doctor visits and copays for wife’s accident.

Transportation and travel costs were a rental car/gas to go to our daughter’s and the local bus in Gulfport. Rental car really could be called medical as it was to take my wife to Jacksonville, so our insurance covered the various doctors etc. visits.

The total expenses were $6,529.58. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers:

Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries - $ 682.24
Boat upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 3729.67
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 4.76
Dining and drinking out - $ 469.14
Entertainment - $ 70.88
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 511.83
Fees – $ -30.96
Marina - $ 492.50
Electric - $ 0
Medical - $ 330
Transportation and travel - $ 269.58
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0

Ummmmmm, excuse me, but you have said this is a Poll to determin if the audience of SN LOVES your monthly figures or if they love them.

I note, checking the forum rules, that this Poll is not in the Poll forum but in the Sailing _ General Discussion forum.

Thusly, and consequently, many, many, many members may feign a disinterest (new meaning of the word not the old) because of your flagrant breach of etiquette

I, myself, and only responding for me, note that each month you have been cruising your "Gifts Bought and Distributed" have plummeted to an all time low of Zero! You have changed from a major benefactor to the world to a curmudgeonly, miserly old sailor! Just like the rest of us cruisers Welcome aboard!

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

I love these posts, Don. They are helpful and informative to me, and I often share them with friends and family that are considering cruising as a retirement option.

Goodonya for not only being disciplined enough in your bookkeeping to be able to to this, but also being so diligent in your follow through in reporting.

Breach of Etiquette - WOW, I didn't know it was possible here.

But O powerful mod, if I've been putting these in the wrong forum for 37 months feel free to move them

I love these posts! When you threatened to leave I had to dig up my CF password so I could find you over there.

P.S. I've showed these to my wife and her response is "We're not good with money, you know we'd spend way more than that."

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

I find these posts usefull as well and hope they keep coming. But I have to agree with @MarkofSeaLife ... The diminishing Gifts line is deeply disturbing. You didn't even buy your wife flowers in the hospital?!

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Gifts are mostly at Christmas

BTW - flowers for my wife aren't "gifts". That would be wife "maintenance" and I would probably put into the "Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries" line because a smart man would not let his women find out he was keeping track of the number
