Ericson 32-3 vs. Cal 33

I am interested in opinions on the 2 boats above. I currently sail a San Juan 28 and it is a GREAT sailing vessel. It is fast, well balanced, and sails well in light air. The trade-off, of course, is that it leaves a bit to be desired below in terms of space and layout. We don't feel that we need that much more space so 32-33 feet for us would be perfect. In fact, my dream boat would be a Tartan 3100 but that is a bit out of our price range. I am more in to performance while my wife really enjoys anchoring so I am looking for a performance oriented boat that has enough space below for occasional overnight and weekends comfortably. Our sailing area is the Chesapeake. Thoughts?

Performance, space, shoal draft... Pick any 2.

Seriously though Chessie is a big target, some places you can sail a 6 foot draft, some places not so much.

Love the look of the Cal 33.
Want a nice boat and decent speed? I know where you can get an S2 9.1 cheap. Guy is a super nice. He's done a lot of work to the boat too. I considered buying it myself. You'd have to move it from Union Hall, VA but I think the boat is worth it for what he's willing to part with it for.

PM me if you are interested.

Re: Ericson 32-3 vs. Cal 33

A later model Cal 33 (86-89) in good shape would be hard to beat. Engine access is excellent and even the shoal draft version is a good performer for a cruising boat. A good compromise of sailing performance and creature comfort. If you look at the Ericson make sure and check out the deck around the anchor locker. I looked at 3 when I was shopping and all had high moisture content in that area. It was just funky the way the anchor locker was installed even after Pacific Seacraft had taken over the building. Maybe JimsCal can tell what to look for in the Cal.

Ericson: The hull/deck joint is heavily glassed together inside with roving, making top and bottom "one piece", i.e. it is very strong. Their internal grid structure reinforces the keel attachment and also carries the rigging loads.
The Cal is certainly adequate, but not as strong.

You ought to check in at the owners' site and ask questions, really.

I have done a two day ocean delivery on that particular Ericson model and it has a soft and easy motion in big seas.

Re: Ericson 32-3 vs. Cal 33

I've owned my Cal 33-2 for ten years now. Very happy with it. Great sailing boat, with a very usable interior. Good storage, terrific engine access, and very solid construction. The Cal is much quicker, with a PHRF rating of 132 compared to 162 for the Ericson here on western LIS.

Thanks all for the replies! Our plan is to keep the San Juan 28 for one more season but I want to start looking seriously next season and I think I am leaning toward the Cal 33.
