New Life Jacket categories?

I am taking a basic boating course through what use to be the power squadron now called Americas Boating Club. Last nights class said life jackets were being reclassified with some numbers that look like weights. I can find nothing online other than the normal classes that have been around a long time.

Here is the organization that just changed it's name.

The ones I am familiar with are here:

Apparently in 2014 they announced new labeling:
Coast Guard Announces New PFD Labeling

It replaces the type I, II, III, IV, V with ... I'm not sure. Pictograms?

But the Coast Guard's website still shows the old classifications, so maybe this effort got dropped:
PFD Selection, Use, Wear & Care

I believe that will require a new ASA 101 & 103 test..

Re: New Life Jacket categories?

Lifejacket labeling and classification is changing. In 2014 the CG issued a new rule removing references to Type codes In regulations on the carriage and labeling of Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs). It can be read here: The short version is that rule removed the Type I, II, III, etc. from lifejacket labeling to be replaced with a more descriptive label using graphics, they also describe the lifejacket in terms of its buoyancy (using the international system of "newtons").

There is a good description of the new labeling and comparison with existing labeling at: and at and at https://www.lifejacketassociation.or...-explaination/.

It will take some time for the old descriptions to disappear (from both lifejackets, websites and training materials); lifejackets labeled in the old style are still valid so long as CG approved and in serviceable condition.
ottos and Minnesail like this.
