Hello all,
I live on the east coast of Florida and I am considering taking a job in Texas. I was doing some research on some of the bays (Galveston, Matagorda, etc..) looking for places to keep my boat as the job will be inland and I will only be able to visit my boat on the weekends. My boat draws 5.5' and has a 47' bridge clearance.
I was hoping to hear from some people who keep their boats along the coast there in regards to the sailing conditions and also hurricane preparation routines in that area.
Here on the east coast of Florida we obviously get hurricanes but in research I see the storm surges in Texas appear to be much higher for the same type storm, maybe due to the water getting trapped in a "bowl" so to speak (gulf of mexico) with nowhere to go but inland. But I see there appears to be 15-20' surges there for even Cat-3 hurricanes. Due to that I suppose you haul out for hurricanes (unless the marina's there have floating docks with 20'+ pilings) so my question is are the boat yards there about sea level or are they built up so the hauled out boats don't float away? What do the people typically do there for Hurricanes?
Just trying to get all the information I can before I make the decision to take the job so thoughts and info from local people would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Dave
