Newport Gets New Transient Facility

Newport’s new Maritime Center is scheduled to open in late May.

Located in the Newport Armory, the $1.46 million facility is owned by the City of Newport and the project has been in the planning stages since 2008. Designed for transient boaters, the aim is to provide the harbor amenities that visiting boaters need.

Facilities will include storage lockers, restrooms and showers, laundry, vending machines, a lounge with charts and Internet access, an information desk and display cases for local attractions’ brochures.

The Ann Street Pier offers public dockage for vessels up to 40 feet, a dinghy dock, pump-out facility, trash disposal and a stop for the harbor shuttle.

Re: Newport Gets New Transient Facility

That's good news. Newport really seems to be trying hard to accommodate all levels of sailors. The town has a nice, reasonably priced mooring rental system, space to throw the hook, tons of sailing history, and flags from around the world. It really is one of the nicest spots to visit in New England. Probably my favorite sailing grounds is the Block/Newport/MV triangle. Unfortunately, the awesome Bluewater bookstore closed its doors last year.

Re: Newport Gets New Transient Facility

For years, the Armory has been a multi-floor antiques flea market, with one of the only public restrooms in Newport for the zillions of people parading up and down Thames Street. Whenever we visit Newport, my wife likes to visit the antiques dealers in the Armory, and I have taken advantage of the facilities and the nice benches in front to do some people watching. I hope the new facility doesn't impact those existing uses too much.
