1975 Grampian 28 Engine Mount Failure

Hello Everyone,

I've got an engine mount that is cracked and wobbling when the engine runs. I've stripped away some of the failed fibreglass repair. Now I'm back to the original mounts and hull in some spots.

When I tap on the two engine mounts, they seem hollow. Does anyone know how these were built? I would have thought hardwood wrapped in fibreglass, but the sound tells me otherwise. Or maybe everything has delaminated?

PS, tried to upload an image, but the sailnet server says no!

You have enough posts to post links.. So join Photobucket.com and paste the IMG code link option into your post - pics will show directly, not links or thumbs.

Our boat has molded engine beds.. From your description it sounds like you're talking about engine beds rather than mounts? Mounts are the adjustable rubber insulated pedestals between the beds and the engine itself.

Maybe bumping this thread will attract an owner..

Last G28 I surveyed was a 1978 and it had a hollow FRP bed taped to the hull.
No wood core.

Grampians are not known for consistency of build so you can't really go by that.

Drill a 1/4" and probe with a metal coat hanger, you'll soon find out if anything is in there. Or as Faster says post a few photos and we should be able to tell you

The hysterical laughter you hear as you drive a way in your"new" boat ..... is the seller.

Re: 1975 Grampian 28 Engine Mount Failure

Well I have not been able to look into this issue since the first post. And yes I am talking about the engine beds, sorry for the confusion!

In the photo below it is hard to see the cracks. They are at the base of the two blocks on the sides, and at the ends of the horizontal cross brace.

Two now useless layers of repairs were attempted, but they delaminated from the original stucture because the surface was not sanded first! Other than that, the repairs would have been good.
