What are typical marina liability insurance requirements

What are typical marina liability insurance requirements in the Great Lakes?

As we're shopping for our new boat (up in the Great Lakes) and lining up insurance, etc. they want to quote insurance with a $100K liability. Was a little surprised. Down here in FL marinas seem to be commonly asking for $300,000 but Marina Jack in Sarasota wants $1M liability. Of course they do have some fancy boats there...

Re: What are typical marina liability insurance requirements

The standards will probably depend on state, local variances. Most marina slip applications you find online will usually show their requirements. The Great Lakes have 100's of marinas so check on the area you are interested in. Grand Traverse Bay, northern Lake Michigan, is pretty standard at $300,000. Take a look at Elmwood Marina in Traverse City, Mi and you will find the information at the end of their seasonal slip application.
You were not specific as to whether you are looking for seasonal or transient. We have the required insurance, but as a transient I have never been asked about insurance at any Lake Michigan marina in Mi or Wi.
If you are looking for seasonal slips your biggest issue will be in finding one available in many locals. In many places the demand outstrips supply

It would be transient. We don't plan to stay put for too long. Interesting that they don't ask for insurance of transients.

Our club requires one million liability( maybe raising it to two) for members and visitors(proof required). This isn't because of possible damage to expensive boats but is insurance related to a fire, oil spill, etc.

Transients in our marina over 3 days are required to show insurance.

Re: What are typical marina liability insurance requirements

Obviously liability proof is going to be dependent on where you are and if they have had any issues in the past. I would think that you would want a minimum of $300,000 to begin protecting yourself. Liability is cheap for what it gives you. Fire or enviromental issues add up fast.

I see that you are in Tampa. Do you have a destination in mind. The Great Lakes covers a lot of area.

That was my thought. And that is why I thought it odd that everyone wanted to quote $100,000. When we asked for more they paused like they thought we were planning some shenanigans.

Northern mitten cities ... TC, Charlevois, Mackinaw, maybe as far over as Rogers City, up to North Channel, Georgian Bay.

They are listing oil spill as separate. And lots higher.

Hull and equipment (price of various boats under consideration)
Boating Liability $100,000
Fuel and other spill $939,800
Medical Payments $1,000
Personal effects (our choice)
Uninsured boater $100,000

Re: What are typical marina liability insurance requirements

I find it interesting that American standard liability amounts are in the $100k to $300k range, yet here in Canada at least $2M is standard.

I have only ever been asked to produce proof of liability insurance by my home marina — never as a transient, and I have traveled the length of the Canadian Great Lakes.

Why go fast, when you can go slow.

.
Difference could be that your legal system is not designed to serve the interests of the Trial Lawyers at the expense of everyone else. Hopefully you don't have bottom dwelling attorneys filing lawsuits for every thing they can think up so insurance can be cheaper.

The two marinas I currently have boats in, Hawaii & California, recently upped their limits to $500,000 from $300,000. Both are publicly owned facilities.
