Hi, I’ve tried to do some research about this but haven’t found any information. I’m looking at a 1974 northstar 1000 that’s in great shape and for a great deal but I was thinking recently about the deck. It has a nonskid fiberglass deck right now but personally I much prefer teak decks. I tried looking up the conversion but only found people going from teak to fiberglass, is this possible to do or something just unheard of? I’r probably cut out the existing deck and make a custom fiberglass one that’s more recessed to fit in the teak. Has anyone done this or even heard of it before?
not done very often two main reasons are cost and weight. $20k of teak deak on a $5k boat, add a 1000# to a 8000# boat is not a good idea. the Northstar is a IOR half ton race boat that is a handful in a blow, small main and very large genoa means lots of sail changes to match the wind velocity.
most people prefer a teak deck until they own one, require a lot of upkeep, that is time most people do not want to spend on a deck.

If the non-skid is in good shape, you will be deducting value from your boat.
However, If you want to install a teak-looking product, look up "Flexiteek" and "Seadek" or any of several other similar products.
Extruded PVC lasts a long time, but is difficult to work with. EDPM does not last as long, it is easier to work with, but does not have the compressive strength of PVC or Fiberglass.

Overbored is exactly right. Teak decks are a deal killer for most folks who have had them or understand what it is like to live with teak decks. It would essentially make the boat almost impossible to sell.
Plus the prohibitive cost makes zero sense relative to the minimal value that an old IOR half tonner has these days. Adding the cost and complexity to build a custom deck only makes matters worse in terms of adding a lot of cost and further reducing the valve of the boat since you can't reverse it as easily and go back to glass decks.
It is easy to overlook how little old IOR boats are worth. I have been offered several old one tonners essentially for free. I am helping a friend restore an old half tonner that he was given for free. That was one of a slew of free boats he was offered and turned.
Adding that much weight to the deck of an IOR half tonner will make the boat harder to sail, and seriously compromises it's seaworthiness and motion comfort and that is starting with a design that began life with poor seaworthiness and motion comfort.
In other words, don't even think of installing teak decks on that boat.
Sounds romantic but would be a heavy dose of boat syphilis after you realized Alice wasnt really 10 ft tall
Move brain and wallet on to other stuff
