Need 1971 Irwin 43.5 Sloop (Rare) Centerboard

I am looking for either: 1) sources for a used retractable centerboard to fit our boat; or, any design details anyone might have or know of so I can fabricate or have fabricated a new one. Ours left the boat during a passage this week in the western Caribbean. Our Irwin is an aft cockpit Sloop, model 43.5, virtually identical to an Irwin 45 shoal draft, retractable centerboard ketch configured design. The centerboard is undoubtedly the same for both boats. Alternatively, anyone with any centerboard design detail info for a 42/43 foot shoal draft, retractable board model will work as well. Any help will be most appreciated. Gene Gammon pointed me in this direction. Bob

I came up with basicly the same idea...

Irwin Yachts - CB IR-30,33,37,42: Standard

Looks like its going to be basically a flat steel plate cut to shape and drilled then coated for preservation.

I've got to ask, what failed that caused the board to part ways? I thought these boards pivoted on a stainless steel rod of ample diameter.

Re: Need 1971 Irwin 43.5 Sloop (Rare) Centerboard

Hi Skipper Jer,
The ~ 7/16" or 1/2" O.D. pin is still there. My supposition is that the heavily loaded solid composite material from which the board is made and through which the retention/hinge passes either failed locally where the pin passes through it from fatigue after 46 years, or, we sustained non-recallable damage to that region of the board (we've owned the boat since 2005, sailed it 20,000 miles plus in all kinds of weather/seas, but not run aground with the board down); in fact we don't know what lead to the failure. It parted ways on a 20+/- knot, 90 degree to starboard winds in moderate seas, heeled 20-25 to port, day, which we've done many times, without issues. We last had the board uninstalled during a yard period in 2008, but not since. Thanks for the very relevant question. Cheers, Bob
