Spring transport on Michigan

Hello all,

I am planning on taking a C&C 41 from Milwaukee to Sister Bay sometime between April 15th and April 30TH. Don't know exactly what to expect. Easterlies would be no fun due to cold and onshore winds. Any thoughts from any? Much appreciated.

Are you going non-stop or in stages?
Do you think you could make it to Sturgeon Bay in a day? Other options are: MKE to Kewaunee to SB through the ship canal then up Green Bay to Sister. You might also sail the "hook" through Port des Morts. Wind will be cool in April. Dress warm.

Once delivered a 55' Fairline the length of Lake Ontario in April. Beware of ice build up.

Ending up in the water would be no fun. Hope you have cold water survival gear.

I think at any time of year, you shouldn't be surprised at wind from any direction. East should be the least common. We have gone from MKE up to Sturgeon Bay and back a few times. We have always stopped somewhere in the middle. However, if you have crew, it might be a good idea to try to push through the night to get further if you get a good weather window. Nice marinas all the way up; Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc (nothing at Two Rivers), Kewaunee (Algoma is a bit shallow), and a number of choices in Sturgeon Bay. I stayed at municipal marinas in those cities. If you have yacht club reciprocity, there will be a few more choices.
