Learning how to Sail

Hi everybody,

My fiance and I are looking to learn how to sail and get a feel for what's involved in living on a sailboat. So we thought if anyone was stopping in Brisbane, Australia and wanted to help us out by passing on their knowledge we would be happy to offer you our laundry facilities if you need them, shower/bath, accommodation if needed and some delicious meals in return. We'd also love to show you the sites and give advice on the area. What we're looking for are some lessons in sailing and tips and advice about living on a sailboat and we'd love to help out with some boat maintenance too to get a feel for what's involved. (Our long term dream is to sail from here to America and Europe).

If you're interested please send us a message!

Thank you kindly!
Zoe and David

Re: Learning how to Sail

why don't you go to your local sailing club and take some lessons on small dinghys?
i think that is the best way to learn how to sail and it is fun too...
back at the clubhouse you will find lots of sailors eager to tell you anything they know over a few beer...

Re: Learning how to Sail

Learn to sail hands on - not just asking others - advice from others is great - but you need something to filter it against - lots of real bad advice out there given by very well meaning folks

Start with the dingy class as noted above - you will learn much quicker than on a large keel boat

Look for ways to crew on other boats. In the U.S. there are MeetUp groups in many cities that are devoted to sailing. There are probably other groups in your area that let beginners in. Remember to bring along some good food to share.

Check with local yacht clubs - many have crew lists that are open to outsiders

Ask skippers what they like about their boat, what the boat does good and what it does not so well. After a while you will start to get a feel for what type of boat you might want to buy.

Re: Learning how to Sail

After a few times on a laser I sailed a Pearson 23 day sailor single handed with no issues. Just gotta get your feet wet...
