Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

Hi everybody
I知 new here in the forum and I知 also new to boating. I知 looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe. On the RYA website is a long list of sailing schools provided. I was checking out some websites of schools. Some are giving a lot of information while others provide few. Also I found the prices for the courses very different.

Can anybody recommend a good school in Europe or give me an advice?
Thanks, regards from Switzerland, Nicole

Re: Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

To get full benefit you need to do the course in tidal waters which usually means going to England. There are several good schools on the Solent where there are tides and lots of boat traffic!

Gibraltar is a very nice place to do the courses but no real tides!

It also depends on the level you choose. Competent crew is a waste of time, Day Skipper is basic but the Yacht Master prep course can be very challenging and really needs to be preceded by the theory week. If new to boating do Day Skipper which is a 5 day basic cruising course covering sailing and navigating skills.

Re: Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

Just came across this thread. We're looking for a sailing school in Europe as well. I'll be posting other threads (so as not to hijack your thread) trying to get input, but wanted to reach out here as well. Let me know what you find out.

We took ASA 101 on a lake in Texas. So I need to find out if that is an acceptable replacement for beginner level classes for RYA. Then, as Yorksailer said, we want to find a school with coastal waters.

A very good RYA school is Trafalgar Sailing, located in Gibraltar. Very friendly, highly competent. I did a Dayskipper course couple of years ago, got my certificate, sailing expirience. The place itself is remarkable

Re: Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

Hi Nicole,

I have done courses with BOSS sailing school in the UK, I liked working with them. I also chose bad UK weather most often to actually get the most of the course itself. I think they had good instructors.

But there will be many all over. Question is how far you want to travel for the course, it will take you 5 days just for the course itself. In fact, I am sure there are RYA qualified schools even in Switzerland. I mention this because you mentioned prices, and hence travelling to the UK or Gibraltar will add to the "price" of a course.

Hope this helps,
paikea

Cool Re: Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

HI Nicole, I've recently done my RYA Day skippers with Sail Due South in South Africa. From what I can gather (and considering the very weak Rand when compared to the Euro or Dollar, it is more economical (Airfare, spenning money and RYA certification still much cheaper than doing it in Europe) and I can guarantee more of an adventure to do your course in South Africa. Apparently they are getting quite a few students from all over the world. I recommend you check them out: Just google them.

Re: Looking for an RYA sailing school in Europe

I found this school White Wake Sailing in Croatia (close to Split, 15 min drive from the airport) to be excellent, and sailing in Croatia is unbelievable. Never mind the cold and wet UK weather.
We had Franco, a very patient and experienced instructor and we learned an amazing amount. Will go back to take the next level this summer
